How to get the AHCF signed up in your area
Having contributions directed to the AHCF through local United Way agencies is much easier than you think. You can take one of two approaches.
The first approach (and the preferred method) is to contact the local United Way office and inform them that you would like to sign up the AHCF as a "contributor's choice" organization. That means that individuals can specify our group to receive their donations. The local office will ask for information such as our name, tax identification number (38-3225425), if we are tax exempt (yes!), a mailing address (use mine above). If there is anything you can't answer have them contact me. We should then be signed up and they should assign us a number. You then get coworkers, relatives, etc. to name us as the recipient of their donations when they fill out their annual United Way pledge cards. If there isn't any room on the pledge card to specify the AHCF have them ask their employer (or contact the United Way) and get a contributor's choice form to submit with their card. By getting hold of the United Way ahead of time we take care of the paperwork and make it easy for contributors. All they need to do is write AHCF and our number!
If we haven't been assigned a number, an individual can still write in AHCF with my address and phone number. The United Way will contact me and get the information they need. This isn't the preferred method because the United Ways don't always find us (or even make a good attempt) and its more work for our donors.
Please also be aware that you might make calls to the United Way and have them tell you that none of this can be done. They are adverse to contributor's choice donations because they no longer control the money. If they tell you it can't be done, contact me and I'll take care of it. It can be done and its an important source of funds for us.
